Most of Edinburgh had burned, part saved by its walls, but walls did not keep out burning debris from the houses in the suburbs outside the walls. At least there had been no attack on Holyrood Abbey. Perhaps the loss of his ships convinced the English king that burning monasteries and abbeys was frowned on by the Blessed Virgin. They had let it be.

The day after they burned Edinburgh, they retired, marching south and west. No doubt they hoped to find some graze there. And now we would go on the hunt.
